چکیده

We present a simple and economical method to produce a potential open microfluidic polymeric device. Biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces were prepared on polystyrene using a phase separation methodology. Patterned two-dimensional channels were imprinted on the superhydrophobic substrates by exposing the surface to plasma or UV–ozone radiation. The wettability of the channels could be precisely controlled between the superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic states by changing the exposure time. The ability of superhydrophilic paths to drive liquid flows in a horizontal position was found to be significantly higher than for the case of hydrophilic paths patterned onto smooth surfaces. # 2010 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Inkjet patterned superhydrophobic paper for open-air surface microfluidic devices.

We present a facile approach for the fabrication of low-cost surface biomicrofluidic devices on superhydrophobic paper created by drop-casting a fluoroacrylic copolymer onto microtextured paper. Wettability patterning is performed with a common household printer, which produces regions of varying wettability by simply controlling the intensity of ink deposited over prespecified domains. The pro...

Tuning microchannel wettability and fabrication of multiple-step Laplace valves.

By using characteristics of titania nanoparticles, a patterning and tuning method of microchannel surface wettability was developed for microfluid control. Titania modification of a microchannel provided a nanometer-sized surface roughness and the subsequent hydrophobic treatment made the surface superhydrophobic. Photocatalytic decomposition of the coated hydrophobic molecules was used to patt...

Wettability patterning for high-rate, pumpless fluid transport on open, non-planar microfluidic platforms.

Surface tension driven transport of liquids on open substrates offers an enabling tool for open micro total analysis systems that are becoming increasingly popular for low-cost biomedical diagnostic devices. The present study uses a facile wettability patterning method to produce open microfluidic tracks that - due to their shape, surface texture and chemistry - are capable of transporting a wi...

Photoinduced cleaning of water-soluble dyes on patterned superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic substrates.

Herein we present a novel but simple method to fabricate photoinduced cleaning substrates with patterned superhydrophobic hierarchical silicon cone arrays (SCAs) and superhydrophilic TiO(2) nanorod clusters (TNCs). In our experiment, the photoinduced cleaning properties of the obtained substrate are investigated by repeatedly adsorbing and decomposing rhodamine B (RhB) molecules for at least si...

Three-dimensional surface microfluidics enabled by spatiotemporal control of elastic fluidic interface.

As an emerging alternative to the conventional counterpart, surface microfluidics incorporates both intrinsic resistive solid-liquid and elastic frictionless gas-liquid interfaces, leading to unique flow-pressure characteristics. Furthermore, the open-surface microfluidic platforms can be fabricated on a monolithic substrate with high wettability contrast by the previously reported one-step lit...
